Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel remains tight-lipped on Romelu Lukaku’s transfer as he said that a lot of players want to join the club. The German tactician did not speak on the transfer as he seems to keep his cards close to his chest.
Several reports have suggested that the Blues are pursuing the Inter Milan marksman on top priority in this transfer window. But Chelsea have already seen their last offer rejected, therefore they will have to cough up more money to land him at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea recently drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly. After the game, Tuchel spoke about the matter at the press conference.
“I will not talk about players who don’t play in my squad. He’s a fantastic player but he’s an Inter player and I will not talk about him in this situation,”
“You can imagine a lot of players want to come and join but we will not talk about that.”
the German told reporter.
The German tactician who guided The Blues to their second Champions League title last season said that the board are targeting some players this summer. He refused to take names but feels that only a few players in the market can improve their current roster.
“The board isn’t offering players, that’s not how it works. We talk to the board about players, have our own opinions, and in the end we target players who in our opinion could make our squad strong, which is quite a challenge.
“There are some players of which we think they can be a good target and improvement in our squad. I will not comment on names as I don’t like it when other coaches speak about my players. So hopefully you understand that.”
Earlier, Chelsea have enquired about Harry Kane and his complicated situation with Spurs. But with Manchester City leading the race for the England skipper, Chelsea have started looking at alternatives. They have shown interest to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland but were taken aback after knowing the Black and Yellow’s high asking price. Then they weighed their chances to sign Robert Lewandowski, but now finally the Blues have shifted their focus to Lukaku.
Tuchel has tried Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz up front, and none of them have had the desired impact. Therefore the Blues need someone who can lead the lines for the German tactician, and Lulaku fits the bill perfectly. Also with Olivier Giroud departing, the requirement to bring in the Belgian became a priority.
Despite winning the Serie A last season, Internazionale are going through financial turmoil. Antonio Conte has left the club, and they are open to selling many more of their stars this summer. Achraf Hakimi joined Paris Saint-Germain in a 60 million euro move. Therefore Chelsea are planning to place a bid of around £111m to lure Lukaku away from San Siro.
The 28-year-old was one of the pivotal players in Inter Milan’s historic Serie A win last season. He netted 24 goals in Serie A and finished second in the goalscoring charts only behind Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo. Lukaku has said that he is ready to return to Stamford Bridge if a fee can be agreed between the two clubs.
