England will go up against Italy in the final of the UEFA Euro 2020 on Sunday, July 11. Ex-Azzurri boss, Antonio Conte, spoke about England in an interview recently, where he touched upon their weaknesses.
Conte remarked in a recent interview that Italy could benefit by pressing high, given that the English defence isn’t as capable as some of the other nations in bringing the ball out from the back. Meanwhile, the Italian also pointed out a lack of adventure shown by the Declan Rice-Kalvin Phillips pivot when in possession.
“In the middle of the park they have two very physical midfielders in Rice and Phillips, capable players who bring balance but very few vertical passes, often going for the easiest option.
One of England’s weak spots is that, if their defense is pressed when building from the back, they aren’t as good as Spain at escaping their opponents’ press. But if you go after them with ultra-offensive pressing and they do escape, then watch out for their pace up front.”
Conte said.
Conte was in charge of the Italy squad during the previous Euro and led his team to the quarter-final, where it was beaten by Germany on penalties. Conte took the Chelsea job post the 2016 Euros, and Italy subsequently missed out on FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification.
Post the World Cup debacle, Italy appointed Roberto Mancini as the head coach of the national team – a decision that has paid off massively. The Azzurri are currently on an amazing unbeaten run and are one step away from their first international trophy since 2006. Furthermore, they are also in the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League and are due to play Spain later this year.
