Spanish outlet Marca has come out with a sensational report. A leaked audiotape of Florentino Perez in which he supposedly had some very interesting opinions on the Los Blancos legends, Iker Casillas and Raul Gonzalez.
With 725 appearances next to his name, Casillas has gone down as one of the finest players that the former La Liga champions have produced. The Spanish goalkeeper has kept 264 clean sheets for the Spanish giants, and that should settle any doubts about his capabilities as a player.
As per the audiotape, speaking about Casillas, Perez remarked that the Spaniart was not a standard Real Madrid goalkeeper back then and even went on to call him a ‘failure‘ and a ‘fraud‘.
“Casillas is not a Real Madrid standard goalkeeper, what can I say? He’s not and never has been,”
“He has been a big failure of ours. The problem is people adore him, love him, talk to him, they defend him so much.
said Perez, as per El Confidencial.
Perez had similar things to say about Raul Gonzalez as well.
“He (Casillas) is one of the biggest frauds and the other is Raul, the two biggest Real Madrid frauds are first Raul and second Casillas.”
The 74-year-old did not stop there however, as he had a few things to say about the general set-up of the infamous Real Madrid line-up back then. He remarked that the players were ‘selfish‘ and that it would be a ‘mistake‘ to trust them.
“The players are very selfish, you can’t count on them for anything. If you do, you’ve made a mistake and they’ll let you down, it’s ridiculous. I have an awful view of the players.”
said Perez.
These comments came in 2006 when Perez stood down as the president of Los Blancos then. He partly attributed Raul as the reason behind his stepping down as the Real Madrid chairman.
Times have changed however, and Perez has managed to bring Real Madrid back to the top of European football. The Whites have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League in the last decade, and with his sights set on building a team for the future, Perez is looking to bring in Mbappe.
