Former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has joined PSG on a two-year deal, the club announced recently. According to Goal, while the 35-year-old waited for offers to come his way, Arsenal and Manchester City were interested in him.
The Gunners made a hopeful try to land the World Cup winner. They offered a two-year contract worth €17 million per season. The Spaniard’s representatives were interested in the offer, but Ramos rejected it as Arsenal were not in the Champions League for the upcoming season.
Manchester City was the next club to offer him a two-year contract as well. The Premier League champions came up with an offer to sign a contract till 2023 and then shift his focus to Major League Soccer. After his two years with City, he was offered to play for New York City, a team owned by the City Football Group.
Once again, Ramos and his representatives were intrigued, but the Spaniard had his head turned with PSG’s lucrative offer. It was, according to Ramos, the best project and hence he decided to join Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
Ramos was earning €12millions per season at the Spanish capital and was happy with his role at the club. The problem occurred later when he was told to take a wage cut. The club’s new contract extension had a substantial wage cut for the 35-year-old.
He took his time deciding his future, and when he was ready to sign, the club announced that the offer had expired. Hence there was no other option but to leave Real.
The Ligue 1 giants offered him a deal worth €12m per season. The Parisians failed to win the Ligue 1 last season and lost to Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals.
Apart from Ramos, PSG have also signed Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan and have roped in Georginio Wijnaldum for free after his contract with Liverpool expired.
