Scotland’s Euro 2020 hero has completed his loan move to the newly-promoted Premier League team for the 2021/22 season.
“I’ve been looking forward to coming here, playing as much as possible and helping Norwich City compete in the Premier League. I spoke to the head coach, he called me and we had a nice talk about how he wants to play and how he sees me fitting in,”
Gilmour said to City’s website.
Norwich boss Daniel Farke highlighted how his team’s record of providing a platform to budding footballers might have attracted Gilmour.
“I think it helped that in the past we have shown that young players with potential are in good hands here at Norwich City. We are delighted to bring Billy in because we’ve lost some players in that area,”
said the German.
Billy Gilmour was signed by Chelsea a few weeks after his 16th birthday. Initially roped in to train with the Under-18 squad, he soon proved that he is ready to play at much higher levels.
He made his Premier League debut back in 2019 against Sheffield United. Since then, there has not been any looking back for the youngster. In a midfield packed with superstars like N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, Gilmour has managed to play 22 games.
Gilmour caught the headlines recently for his outstanding performance against England. He had a big role to play in that 0-0 stalemate, and justifiably, was adjudged the man of the match as well. His performances not only earned him a place in Scotland’s squad for Euro 2020, but he was also trusted with a first XI role. His Euro 2020 campaign was cut short due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, but the performance against England was good enough to attract numerous suitors.
