One game doesn’t decide the best team in the world, says Kohli after WTC final loss

The Indian skipper feels that a series of three Tests would be ideal which gives teams the ability to bounce back or dominate the other team.

The first cycle of the World Test Championship has come to an end. It was India who topped the WTC points table. They had the most points and had the best points percentage as well. They won five out of the six series’ and barring New Zealand, and the Virat Kohli-led side beat every team they played in this WTC Test cycle.

However, they lost in the final to New Zealand, who were crowned as the inaugural WTC champions. They bowled India out for 217 and 170 in the first and third innings, respectively, and chased down 139 in the fourth innings to lift the title. India fared well in the WTC Final as well and were only outplayed on the sixth (reserve) day of the game.

The Indian skipper Virat Kohli doesn’t feel this loss makes India a bad Test side:

“Well, look, firstly, I’m not in absolute agreement of deciding the best Test side in the world over the course of one game, to be very honest.

If it is a Test series, it has to be a test of character over three Tests, which team has the ability to come back into the series or totally blow away the other team.

It can’t just be a pressure applied over two days of good cricket and then you suddenly are not a good Test side anymore. I don’t believe in that,”

Kohli was quoted saying in the press conference after the WTC final.

India’s head coach Ravi Shastri had the same opinion before India flew to the United Kingdom ahead of this tour. However, the ICC have clarified that the WTC final will continue to be a one-off going ahead owing to the hectic schedules.
