Delhi Police special cell arrested Virender Singh Shah and Balam Singh for being involved in betting and providing bookies information during an IPL match.
Virender Singh Shah and Balam Singh were arrested by the Delhi police for leaking match details to bookies from inside the stadium during the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 2.
According to a report in Indian Express, Shah was a liaison officer assistant in a company outsourced by the Delhi and District Cricket Association for accreditation related work for IPL. Singh worked as a peon with the DDCA.
A senior police officer has confirmed that the bookies approached Shah and Balam in order to create fake accreditation cards for two people named Manish Kansal and Krishan Garg.
“Shah has been in the profession for 10 years and Balam is a clerk. They have been approached by the bookies and lured to create fake accreditation cards of their two men.
They found forms of shortlisted applicants from the housekeeping staff company and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). They later removed the forms of two selected applicants and added forms of their men Kansal and Garg,”
the senior police officer said.
The DDCA president Rohan Jaitley has made a statement reiterating the state cricket unit’s policy of zero tolerance against corruption and proposed to conduct an internal review after the investigations are over.
“The person involved has already been suspended and whatever action has to be taken, irrespective of whoever is involved, will be taken appropriately. DDCA has been cooperating with the police investigation and once the investigation is completed, we will act upon it,”
Jaitley told the Indian Express.
On June 10, the bail plea of accused Virender Singh Shah was denied by a Delhi court. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma said that there is no ground to be made out for granting bail, considering the enormity of the offence and the stage of investigation they are still in.
