Shakib Al Hasan lost his cool and reacted furiously multiple times while playing for Mohammedan Sporting Club against Abahani Limited in the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League T20. As a result, the premier Bangladesh all-rounder is set to be banned for four matches.
In the ongoing 2021 edition of the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League T20, Shakib is leading the Mohammedan Sporting Club, and in their latest game against Abahani Limited, Shakib’s anger went through the roof. He was furious with a few decisions and calls taken by the umpires and also got into a tussle with Abahani Limited coach Khaled Mahmud.
The first calamity took place Shakib in the fifth over of Abahani Limited’s innings.
MSC had posted 145/6 batting first, and Abahani Limited were reduced to 11/3 in four overs. Shakib bowled the fourth over and struck Mushfiqur Rahim on the pads. The umpire turned down the appeal, and Shakib was lost his cool big time. He kicked the stumps at the bowler’s end and had a heated argument with the umpire Imran Parvez.
In the very next (sixth) over, with one ball to go and the Duckworth-Lewis method to kick in, the umpires called for the covers as the rain came down. Shakib once again was furious as he picked up all three stumps at the bowler’s end and threw them as he was unhappy with the umpire’s call to take the player’s off.
Furthermore, Shakib also offensively pointed at the Abahani Limited dressing room as well when he was walking off the field after rain intervened. Abahani Limited coach Khaled Mahmud, who also happens to be the Bangladesh Cricket Board director, was fuming and constantly pointed at Shakib. However, things didn’t escalate as MSC batsman Shamsur Rahman intervened to calm things down.
Masuduzzaman, who is the cricket committee chairman of the Mohammedan Sporting Club, has said that the umpires committee have recommended a four-match ban for Shakib. However, they will appeal to the board and ask them to investigate into the matter to find out a reason for Shakib’s reactions.
“We have not got any official letter so far but we have learnt that the umpires committee have recommended four-match ban.
We will appeal to the board and ask them that they must dig the matter and see why Shakib was prompted to take such a step. Naturally, it was not acceptable but at the same time we have to find out why it happened,”
Masuduzzaman was quoted saying to Cricbuzz.
The 34-year-old all-rounder had issued an apology through his Facebook page after the match ended. He accepted that an experienced player like him should not have reacted that way and apologised to the teams, management and the officials.
“Dear fans and followers, I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home. An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens unfortunately.
I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials and organising committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won’t be repeating this again in the future. Thanks and love you all,“
Shakib wrote in his statement that he released on his Facebook page.
It isn’t the first time Shakib has landed in trouble. Earlier in the tournament, the premier all-rounder was let off with a warning as he broke bio-secure protocols by bringing in a couple of bowlers from his own cricket academy. In 2014, he was suspended by the BCB for various problems like beating up a spectator, travelling for the Caribbean Premier League without a NOC, lewd gestures on television and other attitude related issues.
Shakib was also banned by the ICC for a couple of years (one year of that suspended) in 2019 for his failure to report various corrupt approaches.
