Premier League champions are ready to invest in quality players this summer and will stay hungry for more trophies under Pep Guardiola, says chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak.
City were crowned as the Premier League champions after their rivals United suffered a 1-2 defeat against Leicester City at Old Trafford. They won the league for the third time in four seasons and for the seventh time in total. City, who had also won the Carabao Cup against Tottenham were looking to win the treble after making it to the Champions League finals where they had to play against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.
Tuchel, who got the better of Pep twice this season before the finals, managed to repeat history for the third time. The Citizens once again failed to get their hands on a European Trophy.
However, the chairman seems to back Pep even after his blunder in the finals of not starting a centre defensive midfielder.
“We will do everything we can to keep Pep for as long as possible at this club. He is in the right environment and has the right infrastructure around him. We have the greatest trust and the greatest relationship and we have achieved so much. The journey goes on and it will go on as long as Pep is happy and we are happy“.
He also says that the team will be back and will not rest on their laurels after winning the Premier League.
“Having won the league, it is not the time to sit back and be content. That would be your biggest mistake. This is the time to send a strong message that there is no contentment, that you are not satisfied with just winning the league.”
The chairman mentions that the club is looking to strengthen the squad and will emphasize quality after the departure of their star striker Sergio Aguero. He says that the club would use a creative way of dealing with the transfers as the liquidity in the market is low due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“Sergio Aguero’s shoes are very hard shoes to fill but I am confident we will find the right player to fill those shoes. There are other areas in the team that need investment. Not too many – it is not about numbers, it is about quality. But we will bring quality into the squad in a couple of key positions.”
