Six Manchester United players have been named in the UEFA Europa League squad of the season 2020/21. The Red Devils finished runners-up in the competition, losing the final against Villarreal after a penalty shootout.
The Red Devils are the second-most represented team in the final squad, with champions Villarreal the most represented with seven. Arsenal have a representative too – winger Nicolas Pepe – but Tottenham star Harry Kane misses out despite finishing as the competition’s top scorer.
Apart from Fernandes and Pogba, defenders Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan Bissaka have also been named in the end-of-the-year squad. Midfielder Scott McTominay and striker Edinson Cavani join the quartet in the team. Five of those six players played in the final, with Maguire sitting out of the game due to an injury. Fernandes and Cavani were the only players left on the pitch by the end of extra time. Both took a spot-kick each in the ensuing shootout and scored past Geronimo Rulli in goal.
Rulli, meanwhile, is also named in the squad of the season – one of seven Villarreal players to be named. The Argentine saved the decisive penalty from his counterpart, David De Gea, to give Villarreal their first European trophy. Centre-back pairing Raul Albiol and Pau Torres join Rulli in the squad, as does left-back Alfonso Pedraza. Dani Parejo and final’s man of the match Etienne Capoue are the two Villarreal midfielders in the team, along with star forward Gerard Moreno.
