The 23-year-old was one of the United players who scored in the shootout, which ended 11-10 in favor of Villarreal. David De Gea missed the crucial spot-kick after both sets of players had exhausted their options. De Gea’s counterpart Geronimo Rulli scored his attempt, which enabled Unai Emery’s men to lift their first-ever title.
Villarreal took the lead in the first half thanks to a goal by the in-form Gerard Moreno. The Spaniard made a clever run to shake off his marker following a set-piece situation before scrambling the ball past De Gea in goal. Manchester United hit back in the second half through Edinson Cavani, who slammed the ball into an empty net after a huge deflection left Rulli wrong-footed.
Manchester United created a few good opportunities to win the match in regular time. However, Rashford hit his shot wide from close range while Cavani’s header was blocked by Pau Torres from close range. With nothing to separate the two teams over 120 minutes, the match went into penalties, which United lost.
