Jagadeeshan stated, as revealed by India Today, that he feels the CSK skipper is someone who is constantly trying to boost the entire side, including the seniors.
The 2020 season of the IPL was by far the worst for Chennai Super Kings in their history. They lost eight games and won just six, finishing seventh on the points table (worst-ever finish) and just about managing to avoid the wooden spoon.
All their eight losses came in the first 11 matches. After the 10th game, skipper MS Dhoni made a controversial statement in the post-match presentation where he said that CSK didn’t see the required spark in the youngsters in that season.
It did create a lot of stir on social media, and Dhoni was heavily criticised. However, N Jagadeesan has come out in defence of his teammate.
“What he [Dhoni] actually said was completely misunderstood by the press. It was not about the youngsters, Rutu and I did well, to be honest.
What people don’t get is that he’s someone who’s trying to boost the entire team, the seniors as well. When you have such legends in the team, you can’t pinpoint each of them. There needs to be a way where the seniors are backed up.
For them to be backed up, something had to be done. And after his comment, we did well and the team did really well,”
N Jagadeesan said.
After Dhoni’s comment, the Kings did turn things around towards the end of the IPL 2020. They won three games on the bounce to finish the season on a high. Ruturaj Gaikwad stepped up, scoring three successive fifties.
