Real will be without defender Raphael Varane when they face Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final second. The Frenchman added to Los Blancos’ long list of injury woes after it was announced that he would be sidelined for an unknown period on Monday, April 3.
It was the announcement Real fans were dreading – Varane had sustained an injury and was confirmed to be out of the midweek Champions League match against Chelsea. Madrid have had their troubles with injuries this season and are likely to be without a number of players for the semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Varane hurt himself during the first half of Real’s recent win over Osasuna. The Frace international was subbed off at halftime, although that did not stop Zinedine Zidane’s side from winning the match. The club confirmed the Frenchman’s addition to the injury list on Monday via an official announcement. He is expected to be sidelined for ten days as per the Spanish outlet AS, meaning that he will miss the game against Chelsea on Wednesday, as well as a home tie against Sevilla on the subsequent weekend. The full extent of his injury, however, remains unknown.
Apart from Varane, Real Madrid have also lost right-back Dani Carvajal to an injury. The Spaniard missed the game against Osasuna and is expected to be out for a considerable amount of time. Meanwhile, winger-turned-fullback Lucas Vazquez will also be absent when Real Madrid take on Chelsea in the Champions League. Left-back Marcelo could also miss the match due to election duty. However, it is anticipated that the club will provide him with a private plane to reach London in time, once he has fulfilled his obligation.
However, there is some good news on the injury front for Zidane. Both Ferland Mendy and Sergio Ramos are expected to be fit for the midweek clash. They were involved in the first-team training on Monday and are likely to start the match. The pair wasn’t involved in the first leg and instead watched on as Real Madrid secured a 1-1 draw against Chelsea from the sidelines.
