Manchester United could bid farewell to club-great David De Gea this summer. The Spaniard is no longer the outright ‘number 1’ at the club, with Dean Henderson pushing him for a place in the starting XI. The Red Devils are said to be targeting two former players to replace De Gea.
David De Gea’s long and successful tenure at Manchester United looks to be coming to an end. The Spaniard is no longer the clear favorite to start in goal for the Red Devils. Instead, he shares the duty with Englishman Dean Henderson, who broke through into the first team after a positive loan spell with Sheffield United.
Should De Gea leave, Manchester United will likely be in the market for a new backup goalkeeper. While Sergio Romero, Lee Grant, and Joel Pereira all remain contracted to the club, none of them is expected to take over the backup duties. Reports claim that the Red Devils will instead look to bring in a new goalkeeper. They have been linked with moves for two of their former players – Sam Johnstone and Tom Heaton.
Heaton left Manchester United in 2010 without making a senior appearance for the club. However, the Englishman has since enjoyed a successful career which even led to three national team caps. The custodian is said to be on the Red Devils’ wishlist if De Gea leaves the club this summer – says a report by the Daily Star.
Meanwhile, ESPN report that Manchester United are also interested in West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone. The Englishman has been one of the Baggies’ standout performers this season and is expected to stay in the top division, despite his club heading towards relegation. The 28-year-old came through the ranks at United but never made an appearance for the senior team. He left to join West Brom in 2018 in a 6.5 million deal, but the Baggies could potentially sell him to a suitor for thrice the price. Tottenham and West Ham United also remain keen on the player.
