What comes as a surprise to many cricket fans, SRH management has decided to take the captaincy away from David Warner. In his place, another overseas player Kane Williamson has been appointed as the skipper of the side. Williamson has led the ‘Orange Army’ in the past.
As the Sunrises Hyderabad continue to struggle in the ongoing edition of the IPL, the management has announced that New Zealand’s Kane Williamson will now lead the side. However, the change is something, which was suggested by many cricket pundits as Hyderabad are at the bottom of the IPL 2021 points table.
The team has won only one match out of the 6 played so far. Hyderabad has 8 more games left in this season, and they would have to bring out their absolute best in order to qualify for the playoffs. Williamson had led the Sunrises in the 2018 IPL when Warner was banned from international cricket.
Evidently, the decision to remove Warner was not an easy one for the franchise as he has led the team to the playoffs regularly.
“This decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years. As we face the remainder of the season, we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field,”
Hyderabad said in a press release on Saturday.
This season, Kane Williamson missed the first few games as he was recovering from an injury. However, his inclusion into the team strengthened the middle order, which was clearly lacking experience. In the three games that he has played thus far, Williamson has scored 108 runs with the highest score of 66 with a strike rate of 134.81.
Back in 2018, Williamson led the Sunrises for the complete season. He scored 735 runs at an average of 52.50 and a strike rate of 142.44, which definitely elevated his status in the side. He also ended the campaign as the highest run-scorer of the season as he led the Orange Army to the IPL 2018 final.
