Real Madrid and Sevilla met in LaLiga, hoping to capitalize on the previous draw between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Los Blancos had the chance to move to the top of the table but spurned the opportunity thanks to a 2-2 draw.
Eden Hazard went from zero to hero as he rescued a late point for Real Madrid in their match against Sevilla. The Belgian knew little about the goal, though, as a Toni Kroos strike deflected off of him and went past Yassine Bounou. The accidental goal helped Madrid rescue a point in stoppage time against their opponents and kept them in the title race.
A 0-0 draw between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday provided Real Madrid to take the lead in the Spanish top division. Had Los Blancos beaten Sevilla, they could’ve overtaken both their rivals and moved to the first position with just three matches left to play this season. Their better head-to-head record against both Atletico and Barcelona would’ve enabled that.
It looked like that would be the case when Karim Benzema found the net in the opening phases of the match. However, the Frenchman’s celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled the goal out for offside against Alvaro Odriozola in the build-up. To make matters worse, Sevilla then took the lead. Former Manchester City player Fernando opened the scoring for Julen Lopetegui’s side, calmly tip-toeing around in the Madrid box before scoring with a low effort past Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid had to wait until the 67th minute to level the match. Marco Asensio scored for the Galacticos within moments of coming on. However, once again, Real’s joy did not last for long. VAR came into play again, ruling out a Madrid spot-kick at one end since Eder Militao had handled the ball inside his box. Sevilla, instead, were given the penalty, which Ivan Rakitic dispatched with ease.
Nevertheless, Zinedine Zidane’s men never gave up and were rewarded for their persistence in the final moments of the match. Eden Hazard – on as a substitute – deflected a Toni Kroos strike into the net, rescuing a point for his team. As a result, Los Blancos remained in contention for the league title. They are just two points behind Atletico Madrid with three games left to play this season.
