Jos Buttler has resigned as England’s white-ball captain after their group-stage exit from the Champions Trophy. He confirmed on Friday, February 28, that he will lead England for one final time against South Africa on Saturday, which will mark the end of England’s campaign in the showpiece event.
They lost to Australia and Afghanistan in the earlier two matches to get knocked out of the tournament. They came into the Champions Trophy on the back of a 0-3 loss at the hands of India and lost the preceding T20I series against the same team 1-4. On the eve of England‘s final game against South Africa, Buttler confirmed his decision while calling it the right time to step down for the team.
“I’m going to stand down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. Hopefully, somebody else who can come in alongside Baz will take the team where it needs to be. The overriding emotions are still sadness and disappointment. I’m sure, in time, that will pass, and I can get back to really enjoying my cricket, and [will] also be able to reflect on what an immense honor it is to captain your country and all the special things that come with it.”
Buttler said.
Buttler, however, will continue to play for England and wants to enjoy his cricket now while contributing to his country without the pressure of leading the team. He was appointed the full-time captain of the white-ball team in June 2022 and won the T20 World Cup later that year. However, England‘s results have declined sharply since then, as they have failed to make an impact in three ICC events in a row.
Harry Brook is currently the vice-captain of the team and is the favorite to take over the captaincy from Buttler.
