India’s star cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been named as the skipper of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season. PBKS went all guns blazing after buying the former KKR skipper in the two-day mega auction at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and signed him for a whopping INR 26.75 crores to make him the second most expensive player in IPL history.
Notably, the stylish right-handed batter led KKR to win the title in the previous IPL season but he parted ways with them to throw his name in the auction, where a plethora of franchises engaged in the bids. However, it was Punjab Kings, who had the biggest purse and eventually beat them all to sign him.
Notably, PBKS are one of the few teams who are yet to win the coveted IPL trophy. Thus, in a bid to break the jinx and win their maiden IPL trophy, Punjab decided to name a captain who has done it before. This announcement was made by Bollywood star Salman Khan during the reality television show Bigg Boss, where Iyer was present as a guest alongside star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh.
In the same vein, India‘s star batter, who will be seen in action in the ODI series against England, expressed gratitude to the franchise’s management.
“I am honored that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title.”
