Manchester City midfielder Rodri is determined to return to action this season, defying earlier expectations that his recovery would extend into next year. The Spaniard sustained a severe knee injury involving ACL ligament damage during City’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal in September. Following surgery, the club announced that the 28-year-old would likely remain sidelined until the next campaign.
However, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Rodri expressed optimism about an earlier return.
“My target is to come back this season. Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial for me. I don’t want to rush and make mistakes, but I aim for a six-to-seven-month recovery period. Ultimately, the physios will guide my progress.”
Rodri revealed.
Rodri‘s injury came shortly before he made history by becoming only the second Spanish player to win the Ballon d’Or. The accolade followed a stellar year in which he was instrumental in Manchester City‘s treble-winning season, including a match-winning performance in the UEFA Champions League final. The Ballon d’Or ceremony in October, however, was marked by controversy as Real Madrid opted to boycott the event, citing their belief that Vinícius Júnior was more deserving of the award.
Reflecting on the incident, Rodri shared his perspective.
“It’s up to clubs or individuals to decide how to act. Personally, I wouldn’t have done the same. Last year, even though Erling [Haaland] was close to winning, we supported him as a club. The Ballon d’Or celebrates not just a player but their entire year. Winning is important, but showing respect when you lose is even more significant.”
2024 Ballon d’Or winner said.
Rodri emphasized his gratitude for the support he received during the ceremony:
“It was my moment, and I didn’t want to focus on others’ decisions. Being there with my club, family, and those who applauded was a fantastic experience.”
Looking ahead, Rodri revealed that he currently has no aspirations to move into coaching after retirement.
“Right now, I’d say no. I see Pep [Guardiola] and other coaches constantly traveling and busy. I’m not sure if I want that lifestyle in the next chapter of my life. Instead, I admire roles like Txiki Begiristain’s, which seem more relaxed and rewarding.”
Rodri admitted.
