Real Madrid has announced that Luka Modrić has signed an extension, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2024-25 season. The Croatian midfielder, who has been with the Spanish giants since 2012, hinted at his continued stay during the club’s Champions League celebrations.
“Thank you for your support all year. See you next season!”
Modrić told the crowd at the Bernabéu on June 2.
Modrić, 38, has had a storied career with Real Madrid, amassing a joint-record total of 26 trophies, including six Champions League titles and four La Liga titles. His journey with Madrid began after transferring from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, where he had established himself as one of the Premier League‘s top midfielders.
Modrić‘s career at Madrid has been nothing short of spectacular. He overcame initial scepticism from fans and media to become one of La Liga‘s finest players. His pivotal role in Madrid’s first Champions League win in 12 years in 2014 was just the beginning. Modrić, alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro, formed a formidable midfield trio that helped Madrid secure an unprecedented three consecutive Champions League titles in 2016, 2017, and 2018. He continued to shine as Madrid clinched the Champions League title again in 2022.
In addition to his club success, Modrić led Croatia to the World Cup final in 2018, earning him the prestigious Ballon d’Or. Despite his advancing age, he remains a vital part of the Real Madrid squad. This season, Modrić has played a slightly reduced role, starting 18 La Liga games and making 14 appearances as a substitute. His influence, however, remains significant, especially in crucial moments.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has nothing but praise for Modrić.
“I’ve never had a problem with Modrić. As well as being a top player, one of the best in the world, he’s even more spectacular as a person. We’ve never had a problem, and we never will.”
Ancelotti said.
Modrić’s football journey began at Dinamo Zagreb, and after four years at Tottenham, he made the switch to Madrid in August 2012. His decision to stay at Madrid for another year, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2023, highlights his commitment to the club.
