After an exciting and action-packed Indian Premier League season, India will be locking horns with South Africa at home as the Proteas make their way to the Indian shores for a five-match T20I series.
Historically, India have never won a T20I series against South Africa in home conditions, and they would certainly like to change that record this time. India have rested many key players for this series, whereas South Africa are fielding a full-strength squad. That’s why this is going to be a real test for the young Indian squad. But it’s going to be a very interesting series for sure, considering the talent and potential all these players have.

Team News
India. The big news from the Indian camp is the return of all-rounder Hardik Pandya and specialist late middle-order batter Dinesh Karthik. Hardik enjoyed a great outing in the IPL where he amassed over 450 runs, claimed eight wickets, and also led the Gujarat Titans to the title in their maiden season. It seems like he is at the peak of his fitness right now and will bring immense balance to India’s T20I line-up with his all-round skills. That is a big boost for India, with the T20 World Cup only a few months away, and Hardik will be eager to carry his good form forward into this series.
The return of a 36-year-old Dinesh Karthik makes as important news as that of Hardik Pandya. Karthik enjoyed a great IPL season where he played match-winning cameos consistently for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second half of the innings. Karthik amassed 330 runs during the season, at a massive average and strike-rate of 55 and 183.33 respectively.
Senior players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for this India vs South Africa series, looking at the tight schedule ahead and the upcoming one-off Test match against England. In Rohit’s absence and KL Rahul ruled out with a groin injury, Rishabh Pant will be leading India in this set of five matches. Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who enjoyed a very good outing in the IPL as well, has also been ruled out of the series after being hit on his hand in the net session. The selectors are yet to name replacements for both players.
As far as the new faces in the squad go, both Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik have been rewarded for their excellent performances in IPL 2022. Arshdeep has been excellent in the death overs for the Punjab Kings for the last three IPL seasons, whereas Umran Malik made everyone sit up and notice the breathtaking pace he bowled at. Malik clocked speeds near and above 150 km/h consistently and picked up 22 wickets in the season as well. As a result, he has been fast tracked into the Indian side.
Other than that, there are mostly familiar names like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Ishan Kishan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and others. All of them will be looking to perform well in order to retain their place in the squad for the upcoming World Cup.
South Africa. The Proteas will be playing in this series under the leadership of Temba Bavuma. He led them to series victories in both Tests and ODIs the last time India toured South Africa, earlier this year. Bavuma will be looking to lead South Africa to another inspirational win here. He has quite a strong squad at his disposal as well. Most of the players like Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Dwaine Pretorius, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada played in the IPL for various franchises this season and their experience and measure of the conditions will play a big role in deciding the fate of the series.
Miller in particular had a great IPL season as he not only won the title with the Gujarat Titans but also played a pivotal role in their success. The southpaw played match-winning knocks consistently while batting in the middle-order and ended the season with 481 runs to his name at an average of 68.71. Kagiso Rabada also finished as the third highest wicket-taker in the season with 23 wickets, whereas Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram played big roles for their franchises too.
While de Kock amassed 508 runs for the Lucknow Super Giants, including a century, Markram scored 381 runs for the Sunrisers Hyderabad at an excellent average of 47.62. Marco Jansen and Dwaine Pretorius are two other bowlers who enjoyed a lot of success in this IPL season, and all of them will be eager to deliver once again for their country in this series.
Apart from them, the return of experienced left-arm seam bowling all-rounder Wayne Parnell is big news. He last played a T20I for South Africa in 2017. Parnell was dropped from the squad after that owing to poor form and some underwhelming performances, but he is back again after performing well in South African domestic cricket. Tristan Stubbs is another name to watch out for. The young wicketkeeper-batter had an excellent domestic season and was recently picked up by Mumbai Indians in the IPL as a replacement for Tymal Mills. He is rated quite highly and is considered as one of the future South African superstars.

Winners of Past Years
India and South Africa locked horns in the T20I format for the first time in Johannesburg in 2006. The Indian team won that match convincingly as they chased down a modest target of 127 with six wickets and a ball to spare. Since then, the two teams have played 14 more T20 matches between themselves. In general, in 15 face-to-face clashes, India hold the upper hand having won nine times, whereas South Africa have emerged victorious on only six occasions.
If only T20 World Cups are considered, India has delivered commanding performances in them once again. They have met South Africa in T20 World Cup encounters on five occasions and have won four times. The only time they lost was in Nottingham in 2009 and that too by just 12 runs.
The last bilateral series between these two teams was in 2019 when they locked horns in a three-match series. Unfortunately, the very first game of the series was abandoned due to rain and the series ended in a draw, with India and South Africa winning a match each. India do have a bilateral series win against the Proteas to their name, though, and it came in 2018 when they beat the Proteas 2-1 at their den.
The last time South Africa won a bilateral T20I series against India was in 2015 when they registered a 2-0 win with victories in matches at Dharamsala and Cuttack. They will be hungry to win on Indian soil again after a long time, but so will India, who are yet to register a series victory against them at home.
