Andar Bahar is a very popular Indian game with roots in Bangalore that go back hundreds of years. It is played all across the country even though it’s known as Mangatha or Ullae Veliyae in Tamil. It is a game of chance played in the company of a dealer that draws a card from the deck and places it face up. There are also two piles on the table – Andar which stands for inside and Bahar meaning outside.
The dealer continues to deal cards to the two piles alternately until a card of the same rank as the first one drawn appears in one of the piles. As soon as the first card is shown, players need to predict the pile that will contain the matching card.

The Andar Bahar game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and there’s no limit on how many players can play. Traditionally, the players sit around the dealer and place their bets on Andar or Bahar before waiting to see if they were right or not.

If the first card shown from the deck is black, the first card is dealt to the Andar pile. Likewise, if the card is red, it will go to the Bahar pile and that’s how the game begins. The dealer draws cards and places them on each pile until a matching card to the initial one (the “joker”) appears.
If you’re wondering why the piles are called Andar and Bahar, it’s because the rough translation is “inside” and “outside”. On traditional tables, the two piles are dealt in such a way that one is closer to the dealer than the other. The inside pile is nearer while the outside one is a bit further from the dealer’s location.
