The mini-auction for the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League will be held in Kochi on Friday. All ten IPL franchises will be entering the bidding event from IST 2:30 PM as they look to finalise their respective squads after undergoing the keenly followed pre-auction retention and release phase.

A total of 991 players – 714 Indian and 287 overseas – were part of the initial list of players that the Premier League governing council shared with the franchises, letting them know who are the players they can expect to be up for grabs. This list was trimmed for time discretion in discussion with the ten franchises on December 9.

Of these, as many as 87 spots can be filled, including 30 overseas names, considering the maximum squad strength of 25 players. The mini-auction will have teams carrying their remaining purse from the money spent in squad collection at IPL 2022 and after releasing players from the same in addition to the INR 5 crores that each of them will be allowed to spend.

Below is a purse-by-purse divide for each team heading into the IPL 2023 mini-auction, where a whopping 405 players will go under the hammer. While 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad have the maximum sum available up their sleeves, Kolkata Knight Riders are left with the least amount after their retention picks for the bidding war.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – INR 42.5 crores

Punjab Kings – INR 32.20 crores

Lucknow Super Giants – INR 23.35 crores

Mumbai Indians – INR 20.55 crores

Chennai Super Kings – INR 20.45 crores

Delhi Capitals – INR 19.45 crores

Gujarat Titans – INR 19.25 crores

Rajasthan Royals – INR 13.2 crores

Royal Challengers Bangalore – INR 8.75 crores

Kolkata Knight Riders – INR 7.05 crores

All ten IPL franchises looked to retain a core of their squad from the previous season, hoping to maintain stability despite contrasting results before approaching the big purchasing day. And they will have multiple great options to refine and bolster their squads at the auction table.

Of the 405 players that are up for grabs, it is set 2 that is expected to hog the limelight the most and garner great interest from IPL franchises as it features multiple big-name allrounders, with Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Cameron Green registering at a base sum of INR 2 crores. Also included in the set are Shakib Al Hasan, Sikandar Raza, Jason Holder and Odean Smith, players who can help balance the side and combinations.

But the bidding war begins with set 1, where Indian internationals Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey and Ajinkya Rahane are clubbed alongside former SRH skipper Kane Williamson, rising English batter Harry Brook. Also vying for his maiden IPL gig is modern-day giant Joe Root.

Here is how the players stake up in different brackets in terms of base prize:
