Mbappe needs to leave Paris Saint-Germain to match Messi and Cristiano’s level, says Rooney

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has urged Kylian Mbappe to join Manchester United or Real Madrid in order to reach the heights of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman has been a fantastic player for Paris Saint-Germain over the past four years. In 190 appearances across all competitions, he has 190 goals and 93 assists.

The 23-year-old is clearly one of the leading players in world football at the moment, but Rooney, England’s leading goalscorer of all-time, feels he needs to leave Les Parisiens for United or Madrid to make the next step.

“I think he needs to leave that club and go to the PL, PSG is a massive club, but I think he’s done everything he can in the Ligue 1. Maybe a Manchester United or Real Madrid. If he needs to reach the level of Messi and Ronaldo I think he needs to join Manchester United or Real Madrid,”

the current DC United manager said.

The Red Devils are in a transition period under manager Erik ten Hag, and their minimum goal for the season should be to qualify for the Champions League. If they succeed, they will have a good chance of pursuing world-class players next summer, but a deal for Mbappe appears unlikely for the club.

Aside from a world-record fee for the Frenchman, they would also need to shatter their wage structure. The Parisians reportedly pay Mbappe a weekly salary of 1.18 million pounds. Such pay would undoubtedly cause discontent in the United dressing room.

The prospect of signing the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot winner would be welcomed by fans, but the club is unable to spend such large sums of money due to Financial Fair Play concerns.

Despite scoring a hat-trick in the World Cup final against Argentina, Mbappe ended up on the losing side. The defending champions, France, were defeated by La Albiceleste in a nail-biter on Sunday.
