Indian wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh will be one of several stars on display at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup next month, but the 19-year-old is primarily focused on helping her team win the series against Australia.
When the series shifts to Brabourne Stadium for the pivotal third game of the five-match series on Wednesday, Ghosh will once again be expected to thrive in her role as a finisher. On Sunday, she produced some superb late hitting to help India clinch a thrilling Super Over victory over the Aussies in Mumbai.
After the game, stand-in Aussie skipper Alyssa Healy had a first-hand experience of Richa’s abilities and the damage she can cause to opposition bowling attacks. She was appreciative of the youngster’s talent, and confessed that she has an extraordinary future ahead of her.
“She came over to the WBBL and probably did not have quite the impact as she is having in this series. It’s an interesting one for us, but the confidence that she is coming out and batting with, is probably a little terrifying for a lot of Under 19 World Cup sides out there.”
Healy said.
Many aspects of Ghosh’s batting approach resemble Dhoni’s, and the rising star showcased her impressive power-hitting with a slew of powerful late blows at the end of India’s innings against Australia.
The aggressive right-hander revealed that she revered World Cup-winning captain and India great MS Dhoni as a child and used to watch in awe as he established his name as one of the best finishers in international cricket.
“Since childhood, I’ve followed Dhoni and how he used to finish the game. I haven’t had the opportunity to meet him yet. There have been times when he would leave just before we were in for a camp or a match at a venue. Hopefully, I’ll meet him someday.”
Ghosh said as she spoke of her idol.
