Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez stated that if his native Spain fails to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup then he would like to see Lionel Messi and Argentina win it.

La Albiceleste had a nightmare start to their campaign in Qatar. They were defeated 2-1 by Saudi Arabia in their first game. However, Lionel Scaloni’s team has since made a strong comeback, defeating Mexico 2-0 in their next match.

Messi has scored a goal in both games. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner also set up Enzo Fernandez’s spectacular goal against the Mexicans.

If Spain fails to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Xavi believes his former Barcelona teammate Messi will. The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner stated during a recent Q&A session:

“Leo Messi, with Argentina. He is my friend.”

Spain kicked off their World Cup campaign in spectacular fashion, defeating Costa Rica 7-0. La Roja only managed a draw in their second game against Germany, but they still topped Group E.

With the victory over Mexico, Argentina moved up to second place in FIFA World Cup 2022 Group C standings with three points from two games, trailing group leaders Poland, who have four points from two games.

Saudi Arabia, with three points, is third due to an inferior goal difference to Argentina, while Mexico is last with a single point.

The fate of the group, including Argentina’s, will be decided on the final matchday of the group, with Argentina facing Robert Lewandowski’s Poland at Stadium 974 in Doha and Saudi Arabia facing Mexico at Lusail Stadium.
