The Gunners’ mesmerising start to the Premier League saw yet another wonderful chapter added to their already glittering season as Mikel Arteta’s side held their own to come out on top of Liverpool 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Gabriel Martinelli opened the floodgates with a quick counter in the very first minute of the match to stun the Reds faithful. It was followed by a Bukayo Saka brace and even though Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino scored twice to restore the parity on each occasion, it wasn’t enough, as Arsenal handed them their second defeat in the Premier League this season, slipping them to 10th place.
Arsenal scored in the very first minute as Martin Odegaard carved Liverpool’s back-line open with an incisive pass and Martinelli got on the end of it to finish it superbly. Even though the hosts dominated proceedings in the first half, Liverpool had a few chances and it was capitalised on by Darwin. His goal came off an assist from Luis Diaz, who had to be taken off eight minutes later due to injury.
Saka scored twice, including the winning goal from the penalty spot, on either side of Firmino’s equaliser. Thiago Alcantara was penalised for dangerous play on Gabriel Jesus inside the box, and Saka slotted it past Alisson to double his tally on the night and secure a thrilling win for the hosts.
Meanwhile, Manchester United were rocked early by an Alex Iwobi goal inside five minutes. However, star signing Antony scored the equaliser before Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th club career goal to give United the lead of the contest.
The one-goal lead made for a tense and nervy finish to the game, but the Red Devils held on to collect all three points. They are now fifth in the table with 15 points from eight matches.
