2020/21 LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid eased past Girona on the back of a brilliant performance from Argentine centre-forward Angel Correa. Diego Simeone will be delighted with his side’s performance, with Los Rojiblancos currently chasing league leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are thus far undefeated in the league.
Atletico took the lead early on as Correa was perfectly positioned for Antoine Griezmann’s perfectly weighted lob towards the far post. The Argentine doubled Atleti’s lead early in the second half as well, capitalising on a mistake from Girona keeper Juan Carlos.
Rodrigo Riquelme responded with a goal of his own, as a long range effort took a deflection, wrong-footing stalwart keeper Jan Oblak. The Slovenian made a few great saves in the game, particularly from an Aleix Garcia effort which initially looked like it could creep in.
Real Madrid also posted a victory over Getafe in a one-sided game. They were put in front by an Eder Militao header, assisted by Croatian great Luka Modric.
The 14-time Champions League winners were unable to find the end product, as Rodrygo had a frustrating night, missing a big chance minutes before halftime. He also had a goal chalked off for offside in the second half as the game ended 1-0.
Valencia got the better of Osasuna as the squad seems to have adapted to manager Gennaro Gattuso’s style of play. Edinson Cavani was influential in the game, registering an assist but also missing two big chances, including a penalty which bounced off the crossbar. Justin Kluivert and Mouctar Diakhaby scored Valencia’s goals as the Spanish titans wrapped up an impressive 2-1 win.
Elsewhere, returning Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli started off with a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao. The Basques are now firmly in third place, only behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.
