Brendon McCullum addressed his team in the dressing room after the purple army defeated the Punjab Kings by five-wickets on April 26. He claimed the game helps people in these tough times.
McCullum claimed that the cricket players are privileged to play in the Indian Premier League and stay safe in bubbles. He asked the players to play the brand of cricket that will provide the people something to cheer for in the pandemic.
“I know people out there are struggling at the moment in terms of the pandemic and the situation not just here in India but also abroad. It’s heightened here in India. I understand it’s a difficult time,”
ex-Kiwi captain claimed.
He also added that the team is going to do the best to try and play a brand of cricket that can give people back home something to look forward to, even if it is just for 3 or 4 hours.
“We are in a very privileged position, we can give a little bit of hope even in these difficult times,”
he added.
The second wave of COVID-19 has hit India hard. Over three lakh positive cases have been recorded on a daily basis for almost a week now, and the death toll is also going up. Cricketers like Pat Cummins and Brett Lee have also come forward to aid India in the fight against the virus.
In KKR’s recent match against PBKS, Eoin Morgan’s team managed to end their losing streak after four losses on the trot. With the win, they moved to fifth in the points table.
The KKR skipper also struck form. He scored an unbeaten 47 off 40 balls against PBKS. After winning the toss and opting to field, KKR restricted their opponent to a paltry 123 and chased the total down with 20 balls remaining.
