According to multiple sources, Former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea forward Diego Costa is all in for a shock return to Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers after 15 million pounds new boy Sasa Kalajdzic suffered a devastating knee injury.
The 25-year-old Austrian suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Southampton at Molineux. Kalajdzic only joined Wolves from Stuttgart last Wednesday, and it is now expected that he will miss the majority of the season.
Wolverhampton manager Bruno Lage is short of strikers, with 31-year-old Raul Jimenez his only known option after young star Fabio Silva joined Anderlecht on loan. Jimenez also complained of a groin injury during Saturday’s warm-up. As a result, Wolves the club moved quickly to give Costa the opportunity to show he can still play in the Premier League.
The 33-year-old will report to Wolves’ Compton training base on Tuesday and will undergo all necessary medical checks. Wolves, however, will be concerned about his match fitness because he hasn’t played for a professional club since leaving Atletico Mineiro in Brazil in January.
If the trial goes well, the Spain international will be offered a one-year contract by Wolves and the Brazil-born Spanish forward will provide cover for Kalajdzic while he recovers. The West Midlands club may even extend Costa’s contract if he performs well.
Costa is a proven Premier League scorer, having netted 52 goals in 89 games for Chelsea between August 2014 and May 2017, winning two titles in the process. However, he has struggled since then, scoring only 19 goals in all competitions for Atletico, his previous club.
Costa’s trophy case is equally impressive. He has also won two La Liga titles, three European Super Cups, the Brazilian title, the Europa League, Copa del Rey, the Brazilian Cup, and the EFL Cup. He has also earned 24 senior caps for Spain.
Wolves had a difficult start to the season, losing all five of their games. The 1-0 win over Southampton has moved them up to 14th in the table, but their next four games are against Liverpool, Manchester City, West Ham, and Chelsea, presenting a difficult challenge.
