Both Liverpool and Everton completed deadline day deals for midfielders. The Reds signed Arthur from Juventus on loan to bolster their midfield, while the Toffees did a double deal for Idrissa Gana Gueye and James Garner.
Liverpool bolstered their midfield on Deadline Day by signing Arthur Melo from Juventus on a one-year loan for a 4.5 million euro loan fee, with the option to turn his move permanent at the end of the stipulated period for an additional 37.5 million. He became the Reds’ fourth signing of the season; they had previously signed Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho, and Calvin Ramsay in preparation for the 2022/23 season.
Speaking to the club media, the Brazilian credited a conversation with the coaching staff as the key reason behind a late window transfer.
“We talked a lot, and our ideas and visions were a good fit so I’m sure it was the right choice. I’m really happy and highly motivated to continue living my dream on the pitch and giving my all in a Liverpool shirt,”
said Arthur, who will wear the number 29 for the Reds.
Arthur swapped Barcelona for Juventus in the summer of 2020, two years after he had signed for the Spanish giants from boyhood club Gremio. He made 63 appearances for the Bianconeri in the 2020/21 and the 2021/22 seasons combined and scored one goal.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Merseyside neighbors Everton, too, were busy on deadline day. The Toffees dipped into the transfer market to complete a double deal for midfielders Idrissa Gana Gueye and James Garner.
Gueye returned to Goodison Park from Paris, having left the club to join Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2019 in a 30 million pound deal; Everton sealed his return for a minor 2 million fee, tying him down until 2024.
On the other hand, Garner left boyhood club Manchester United to sign for Frank Lampard’s side in a deal which could be worth slightly more than 15 million pounds if all the add-ons are achieved. The English central midfielder signed a four-year contract with the club, becoming their eighth signing of the season.
