Carlo Ancelotti’s side maintained their perfect record by beating Real Betis, 2-1. Elsewhere, Robert Lewandowski scored again as Barcelona thumped Sevilla 3-0 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time this campaign, Los Blancos took the lead just nine minutes in through Vinicius Jr, who ran in behind the Betis defence to get to the end of a David Alaba pass before clipping the goalkeeper.
Betis, who narrowly missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification last season, equalized in the 17th minute – former Real midfielder Sergio Canales drawing things level by squeezing the ball between Thibaut Courtois’s legs from a tight angle.
But, the hosts weren’t to be denied the win. five minutes past the hour, Lucas Vazquez sent Federico Valverde to the touchline with a through ball, and his pull-back was diverted into the goal by Rodrygo Goes.
Barcelona matched Real Madrid’s heroics by beating the other side from Seville, Sevilla, in the late kick-off. Xavi Hernandez’s side raced ahead in the 21st minute when Raphinha headed the ball into the net from close range after Fernando had managed to clear Robert Lewandowski’s lob over the goal line.
The Poland international wasn’t to be denied a second time; in the 36th minute, the forward controlled a long pass from Jules Kounde on his chest and fired the ball past Yassine Bounou to put his side two goals up.
Kounde provided the assist for Barcelona’s third goal, too, scored in the 50th minute by Eric Garcia. The Spaniard bundled the ball over the line after Kounde headed it into his path off a cross from Raphinha. 3-0, Barcelona won and, still unbeaten, moved to second in the league table.
Elsewhere, Alvaro Morata gave Atletico Madrid the lead in the 5th minute of their match against Real Sociedad, turning in the rebound after Alex Remiro had prevented Yannick Carrasco’s corner from sneaking in directly. But, Sociedad’s new signing Umar Sadiq headed in the equalizer in the 55th minute, ensuring the spoils were shared.
