The Hundred 2022 came to a conclusion on Saturday with Trent Rockets men and Oval Invincibles women holding the respective trophies at the home of cricket Lord’s. Trent Rockets, who were defeated in the Eliminator in the inaugural edition, made up for it by claiming the championship this year.
Having reached the final after topping the table, Rockets overcame the challenge of Manchester Originals, who were on a six-match winning streak. Sam Cook starred with the ball for Rockets on a deck that wasn’t fit to host tournament finals in the shorter format.
Cook dismissed Laurie Evans and Wayne Madsen in his first two sets, while Daniel Sams had Phil Salt caught at long-on – to reduce Originals to 22/3 in 23 balls. Tristan Stubbs and Ashton Turner were trying to rebuild the innings before Samit Patel struck twice in two balls to send Stubbs (18) and Paul Walker back.
Turner scored 26 off 13 while Tom Lammonby added 21 off 18 as the Originals huffed and puffed their way to 120/9. Cook finished with 4 for 18, whereas Patel picked 3 for 23 in 15 balls.
Rockets weren’t able to score at a brisk rate either, having lost Alex Hales early. Tom Kohler-Cadmore added 18 while Dawid Malan scored 19 before they were dismissed by Matt Parkinson and Walter, respectively. Colin Munro threatened to take the game away from Originals, smashing 16 off 6 but holed out at long-off.
Fast forward, Rockets needed 11 off the last five with two wickets in hand – with captain Lewis Gregory at the crease facing Richard Gleeson. The first delivery was full, in the slot and Gregory had no difficulty belting it over square leg for a maximum. He then hit a full toss to fine leg for a four before completing the run-chase with a single on the next ball.
Kapp powers Invincibles to second consecutive women’s Hundred trophy
Earlier in the day, Oval Invincibles women lived up to their name and defeated Southern Brave in the last year’s final rematch to bring home the second Hundred championship. Invincibles defeated Brave by five wickets in what was the first of the two low-scoring contests on the finals day at Lord’s.
Brave regretted the decision to bat first as they could get the measure of the pitch. Danni Wyatt and Smriti Mandhana couldn’t be their explosive selves, adding 33 runs in 29 balls before Shabnim Ismail had Wyatt (15) caught on her own bowling with an excellent catch. Sophia Smale then caught Mandhana (17) off her own bowling.
Sophia Dunkley (26) and Tahlia McGrath (20) added 44 runs for the third wicket before the latter was cleaned up by Eva Gray. Alice Capsey then struck twice in the same set. From 82 for 3, Brave lost five wickets for just 11 runs and finished with 101/7.
Chasing the target, Invincibles lost Lauren Winfield-Hill early before Capsey smashed 25 off 17. Amanda Wellington cleaned up Suzie Bates for just 3 through her legs while Capsey lost her timber trying to reverse sweep Georgia Adams.
Having been reduced 33 for 3 in 32 balls, Marizanne Kapp took matters in her own hands and scored an unbeaten 37 off 33 to take the team over the finishing line with six balls to spare. For her all-round effort of 1/19 in 20 balls with the ball and 37*, Kapp was awarded the ‘player of the match’ – her second in a row in the Hundred final.
