PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo admitted to being in talks with other Premier League clubs while also revealing his interest in joining Manchester United during the summer transfer window.
The Netherlands international was linked with a move to Old Trafford as the club sought to bolster its attack before the end of the transfer window. At the end of the month, the 23-year-old stated that the Red Devils were a “serious option” for him.
However, the winger remained at PSV and explained why a move did not take place on the Eindhoven club’s YouTube channel.
“At the start of the window, United registered their interest but not very strongly, so I was waiting for a bit, and then the end was approaching and the signals became more positive. I started thinking it could fall that way eventually.”
“The interest faded last week, so the whole window I worked towards that and then it faded. So then I was watching last week, thinking ‘what is the right thing to do?”
After his move to Manchester United fell through, he was linked with Southampton and Everton before deciding to stay in Holland.
The player also revealed that former Manchester United and current Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal told him that a move right before the World Cup would be ‘unsuitable’ because he would have to adjust to a new environment.
Gakpo’s impressive performances for club and country may result in additional bids for him during the January transfer window. The attacker has six goals in four Eredivisie appearances this season, helping PSV to a perfect start to the season.
United chose not to sign the PSV star and instead looked elsewhere in the Netherlands to strengthen their wing options, as Brazilian star Antony was purchased from Ajax in a deal worth up to 85 million pounds.
When they face Premier league table-toppers Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, the Red Devils will look to demonstrate that they are strong enough to compete this year after their acquisitions in the summer window.
