After an illustrious 15-year career with Real Madrid, which saw Marcelo go down as one of the greatest left-backs of all time, the Brazilian decided to take a new step and joined Greek club Olympiacos. He was busy picking up a club after his departure from Madrid a few weeks ago and finally circled the reigning Greek champions, with offers available from Leicester City as well.
There are no details revealed by his new club regarding the contract, but it is expected to be a one-year contract with an option to extend another year. The 34-year-old has been registered to play in the Europa League, giving the player a new experience of European football having won five Champions League titles with the Los Blancos.
”We’ve spoken and we’ve decided it’s best like that,”
Marcelo said in confirming his exit after being an unused substitute in May’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool.
“I’ve already done everything I had to do at Madrid. I’ve been lucky to be here for 15 and a half years at the best club in the world.”
Marcelo had some opportunities to travel back to his native Brazil, but he dismissed them, saying he can continue for a little longer at the highest level in Europe. There were some rumours suggesting his imminent retirement after leaving Real, but the player is not keen on hanging his boots just as yet.
The Brazilian made his way to the Santiago Bernabeu from Fluminense back in 2007 as a 19-year-old and didn’t take long to establish his position. In 2022, he left the club as their most decorated footballer ever in terms of trophies won, taking home 25 of them, including five Champions Leagues, six Premier League titles and four Club World Cups.
The player is expected to make his debut in the coming week when Carlos Corberan’s men take on Nantes in the Europa League or in their next league fixture in the weekend. Marcelo’s flair and experience instantly make them better and could help significantly in their pursuit to regain the Greek league title.
