The Red Devils have signed free agent Christian Eriksen to a three-year deal, the club confirmed on July 15. After returning to football following his collapse at the Euro 2020, the 30-year-old spent the second half of last season on a six-month contract with Brentford.
“Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started. I have had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford many times but to do it in the red shirt of United will be an amazing feeling.
“I have seen Erik’s work at Ajax and know the level of detail and preparation that he and his staff put into every day. It is clear that he is a fantastic coach. Having spoken with him and learned more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I am even more excited for the future.
I still have major ambitions in the game, there is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey,”
he told the club’s website.
The Dane is the second signing made by new United manager Erik ten Hag, following the arrival of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord. He will join a United midfield that has lost free agents Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata earlier this summer.
The Red Devils already have a creative No.10 in Bruno Fernandes, but Eriksen could sit a little deeper and pull the strings alongside a holding operator like Fred, Scott McTominay, or potential new arrival Frenkie de Jong. United are also reportedly in advanced negotiations with AFC Ajax to sign defender Lisandro Martinez.
Eriksen collapsed on the field during Euro 2020 due to a cardiac arrest and was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. The midfielder returned to football earlier this year after signing on a free transfer with Brentford, making his debut in February.
He appeared in 11 games for Thomas Frank’s side, scoring one goal and assisting on four others. The player scored 51 goals in 226 Premier League appearances for Spurs between 2013 and 2020. In 2020, he left Tottenham to join Inter Milan, where he won the Serie A title under Antonio Conte.
