Manchester United have completed the signing of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, the club announced on July 5. The Red Devils have swooped ahead of Olympique Lyonnais to secure a deal for the 22-year-old.
The player joins the Red Devils on a four-year contract – with the option to extend it by another year – in a 13 million pound deal. United swooped in at the last second to sway the youngster away from Lyon, who, as per reports, had already struck an agreement with Feyenoord for the transfer.
Malacia broke into the Feyenoord first-team in 2017, making 11 appearances in the Eredivisie and three further across other competitions.
He eventually made the left-back spot his own; in 2021/22, he played 50 times for the Dutch giants across three competitions, as they finished third in the league and lost to AS Roma in the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Speaking to the Manchester United website for the first time since his move, the Dutchman was full of praise for his new team and manager, Erik ten Hag, who made a similar switch to England from the Netherlands this summer.
“It’s an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager leading us.”
“I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.
“Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt. I’ll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family,”
he said.
Playmaker Christian Eriksen is likely to follow Malacia in through the doors at Carrington. The Danish international is nearing a free transfer to United after resurrecting his career at Brentford in the latter half of the 2021/22 season.
