Manchester City are expected to bid farewell to some key players this summer. Striker Sergio Aguero has already announced his departure from the club after a decade. Fernandinho, meanwhile, is also rumoured to be on his way out. City, as such, are looking for the Brazilian’s replacements.
According to a report by Portuguese outlet A Bola, Manchester City are eyeing three players as a potential replacement for Fernandinho. The Brazilian midfielder has been a key figure in the City team over the last few years but is yet to renew his contract at the club.
While there is no confirmation yet of Fernandinho’s exit from City, reports have stated that he could leave the club this summer. If so, he will join Sergio Aguero, who confirmed that he will leave the Citizens after a decade-long stay earlier this week.
Fernandinho will turn 36 in May this year, and City have begun looking for his replacements. One of the names mentioned in the report is Sporting Lisbon’s João Palhinha. The 25-year-old is enjoying a successful campaign in Portugal, where his side remains unbeaten in the league.
Palhinha has returned to the Sporting team after a two-year-long loan spell at SC Braga. He was coached by Ruben Amorin during his final months at the club, who is now his head coach at Sporting. The midfielder received his first call-up to the Portugal national team in March 2021 as a reward for his performances. He played all three matches for the Selecao and even scored a goal.
However, City’s list does not stop at Palhinha. Borussia Monchengladbach’s Dennis Zakaria is also said to be a target for them. The Swiss midfielder has endured a terrible campaign with his club side currently struggling in the Bundesliga. However, he remains one of the most coveted players in his position in Europe, courtesy of his skill set.
Meanwhile, City are also said to be eyeing Sheffield United’s, Sander Berge. The Norwegian defensive midfielder joined the Blades in January 2020 and has since established himself as a key part of the team. However, United are expected to drop out of the Premier League, barring a miracle, with the team rooted to the bottom of the table.
