Chasing the target of 236 in 41 overs, Jason Roy scored 73 off 60 while Phil Salt hammered 77 off 54 to help England win the second ODI in Amstelveen on Sunday.

The weather played a spoil-sport for the Amstelveen crowd as the second ODI between England and Netherlands was delayed by a couple of hours due to rain. Eventually the rain stopped and the match was reduced to 41 overs per side. Eoin Morgan’s men registered a six-wicket victory to take an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series.

The visitors were given a target of 236 from 41 overs. Roy, who was dismissed cheaply in the first match carnage, made a statement with three boundaries in the first over.

Salt, one of the three England centurions from the first game, was watchful in the beginning but changed gears soon. The duo put on a 139-run partnership for the first wicket in just 17 overs before Roy holed out to his cousin Shane Snater on 73 off 60.

Salt was excellent in his knock of 77 off just 54 but when it looked on course to the second consecutive hundred, he was cleaned up by Aryan Dutt. Morgan’s terrible run continued as he was dismissed for a duck for the second time in two games.

Liam Livingstone was bowled by a beauty from Tim Pringle. Dawid Malan (36* off 50) and Moeen Ali (42* off 40) then took England over the line with an unbroken 62-run stand.

Earlier, the Netherlands were reduced 36/3 inside 10 overs. The stand-in captain Scott Edwards stepped up with the bat, adding 61 runs with Bas de Leede for the fourth wicket and 73 runs with Teja Nidamanuru for the fifth wicket. Edwards scored a superb 78 off 73 to propel the hosts to a good total.

England claimed 10 points towards the ICC CWC Super League, now sitting second with 115 points. They’d like to cap off the series with a clean sweep when they face the Netherlands in the third ODI on Wednesday.

    Brief scores

    Netherlands – 235/7 in 41 overs (Edwards 78, de Leede 34; Willey 2/46, Rashid 2/50)

    England – 239/4 in 36.1 overs (Salt 77, Roy 73; Dutt 2/55)
