Aymeric Laporte was left frustrated with his omission from the Professional Footballers’ Association Premier League Team of the Year, which includes former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as the English top flight’s best-performing central defenders of the 2021/22 season.
The Spain international-back took to social media to demonstrate why he should be in that list by sharing a meme of Jose Mourinho wherein the Portuguese gaffer says, ”I prefer really not to sneak” before sharing his impressive stats from the season.
Although, he may not have spoken exactly what he thought of the TOTY line-up, he made it quite clear with a series of tweets and Instagram posts boasting of his incredible stats.
From tweets stating he is the highest-scoring central defender to Instagram posts showing he has had the best passing accuracy for any player, Laporte made sure he made his point clear to all of his 1.7 million followers on social media. To make his point clearer, the player made sure not to put any caption on the points – that clearly shows how unsatisfied he was with the declaration.
Many have indeed been confused by the TOTY list that also saw another notable absentee from the list – Tottenham striker Heung-Min Son, who actually was the top-scorer of the league this season and thus won Premier League Golden Boot.
The forward, though, has kept quiet about missing on a spot in the coveted list, but fans and pundits have definitely shown their displeasure on the attacker’s omission. The 29-year-old had struck 23 goals last season and shared the coveted Golden Boot award alongside Liverpool Mohamed Salah, who also went on to win the league’s Player of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail have come up with an alternative list that includes the likes of Son, City’s Rodri and Ederson. Sadly for Laporte, he was left out from that squad as well.
The 28-year-old appeared in 33 games for the Premier League champions, scoring four goals in the process. He also kept 15 clean sheets last term, four less than his teammate Joao Cancelo amongst all City defenders.
