Reports suggest that Manchester United, who are planning for a massive summer squad overhaul, are looking to sign French forward Christopher Nkunku, who has had a breakthrough season with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
The player’s form in front of goal as well as his ability to combine in the final third, has made him an invaluable asset in the eyes of several of Europe’s top clubs, and competition for his signature will certainly be intense.
Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg shared an interesting detail recently, which might prove to be interesting from the perspective of the Red Devils fans.
The last line in his tweet might prove to be the caveat but at least, Manchester United have made first contacts with the player and his representatives. It could prove to be a long saga and it will be interesting to see which club wins the race for Nkunku, who joined RB Leipzig in the summer of 2019 in a deal worth 13 million euros, after coming up through the youth ranks in Paris Saint-Germain.
Since then, he has grown to become one of the most promising talents in European football. Having racked up 47 goals and 47 assists in 135 appearances for the Bundesliga side, Nkunku has proven his potential after leaving PSG where he didn’t get enough game time.
The 2021/22 season, especially, has been quite fruitful for the 24-year-old. He netted 35 times and supplied 20 assists to his teammates in 51 appearances across all formats. It also included a sensational hattrick against Manchester City in the Champions League group stages.
Nkunku has also ended up with the joint-highest number of goal-creating actions (28) in the Bundesliga alongside Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller. He has also won more man of the match awards from WhoScored (10) than any other player in the league.
