Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has responded to his take amid criticism of Liverpool fans booing the national anthem before the FA Cup final. The Reds secured their second trophy of the campaign on Saturday afternoon, defeating Chelsea 6-5 in a nerve-wrecking penalty shootout.
The Duke of Cambridge Prince William who is the president of the Football Association was met with loud boos from the Reds fanbase as the stadium announcer introduced him at the ground. And minutes later, the same supporters booed the national anthem as well as the traditional ‘Abide With Me’.
Although the fans were criticised for the act, a bit of research into the Reds’ history as a city, its treatment and a feeling of detachment from the rest of the nation, would explain why the situation happened, a fact that the boss understands.
When asked about the actions of Liverpool supporters, manager Jurgen Klopp replied:
“In this situation, it’s best to ask the question, why does it happen? I know our people that well, that they wouldn’t do it if there’s no reason for it.
“I’m not here long enough to understand the reason for it – it’s something historical and probably a question you (the media) can answer much better than I ever could.
“The majority of our supporters are wonderful people, really smart, go through lows, go through highs, suffer together. They wouldn’t do it if there would not be a reason, that’s what I know. Maybe we should ask this question.”
While the fans were booing before the game, they were celebrating wildly a couple of hours later after their team defeated Chelsea on penalties to lift the FA Cup. The game was almost similar to the one held in February between the two sides, as Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the shootout to lift the Carabao Cup.
The win on Saturday marked the Reds’ second trophy of the season and the club could actually become the first English side to win quadruple as they are in the running to win the Premier League as well as the Champions League.
They are scheduled to play Southampton on Tuesday and ensure that the Premier League title race goes to the final day. They are then scheduled to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final at the end of the month.
