Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has revealed that Real Madrid weren’t the only club he was in conversation with before signing an extension with the Parisians. The player was in negotiations with Liverpool, too.
Mbappe penned a historic extension with the Ligue 1 champions last week, putting an end to the rumours of a move to Real Madrid in the summer. Los Blancos were in direct contact with the Frenchman’s camp for long, but an offer from PSG of mammoth proportions and significant importance blew them out of the water.
However, in an interview with the Telegraph, the 23-year-old revealed that Liverpool, too, explored the opportunity of signing him upon the expiration of his contract.
“We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit,”
he said.
Mbappe claims the reason behind the Liverpool links was his mother, who, he says loves the club. The France international also confirmed that this was the Reds’ second attempt to sign him – after they made one half a decade ago while he was still at Monaco.
“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favorite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why – you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club,”
Mbappe added.
Despite the interest of other super clubs, the forward chose to stay at PSG. When quizzed about the same, the forward claimed he did so because there’s still more to come from him at Parc des Princes.
“I don’t think my chapter is closed. Things were not over for me at PSG,” he emphasized.
The Frenchman signed for the Parisians in 2017 from boyhood club AS Monaco. The forward spent the first season on loan at PSG before signing for them on a permanent contract a year later.
In the five years since he initially made the switch to the French capital, he has won four of the five league titles, scored 171 goals, and finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer four seasons in a row.
