Manchester United are considering a move for Lazio’s midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic if their proposed deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong succumbs. The Red Devils are said to turn their attention to the 27-year-old who has been a target for the Premier League giants for “many years,” reports Sky.
United will be in the lookout for at least one midfielder with Matic and Pogba being reported to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.
As per the reports, Lazio president Claudio Lolito recently claimed that the club turned down a 119 million pounds for the Serbian midfielder, though it might have been claimed to raise the bidding value of the player who is almost certain to depart Stadio Olimpico. It is belived that a fee in the region of 59-60 million pounds will be enough to seal the deal for the player, with the report stating that the fee could be even less.
However, United are not the only team to be interested in signing the 27-year-old as Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly interested in the Serbian and view him as an alternative to Paul Pogba. The Frenchman is set to leave United on a free transfer this summer, but Juventus are currently favourites to land him back to the Serie A. It has been reported that Juve also see Milinkovic-Savic as a potential alternative if the Bianconeri fail to sign Pogba.
The Serbian has been linked with a move away from Stadio Olimpico for a number of years but is now expected to depart this summer given he is entering into his final two years of the contract at Rome which is ending in June 2024.
Italian super-agent Roberto De Fanti, while conversing with CaughtOffside, recently stated:
“I believe this summer could be the time that Milinkovic-Savic leaves Lazio and I won’t be surprised if the destination is Manchester United. I can say for sure that there are already whispers in the industry that he could move to Old Trafford in time for next season.”
Milinkovic-Savic has played 293 games for Lazio across all competitions, scoring 58 goals in the process.
