Frenkie de Jong is reportedly close to leave Barcelona for Manchester United in a news that is certain to please incoming boss Erik ten Hag.
As per a report from AS, a deal is close for the transfer of former AFC Ajax man to Old Trafford from Camp Nou. The Catalan giants are expected to allow the 25-year-old to leave Barca if the Red Devils make an offer in the region of 60 million pounds.
The deal could work wonders for both the player and the incoming boss as it would reunite ten Hag with his former Ajax protégé. Amid rumours of Paul Pogba leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer with Juventus seemingly interested in the return of the French international, the Red Devils would urgently need another central midfielder, a role the Dutch star would thrive at.
The 25-year-old is currently valued at 63 million by Transfermarkt and could well be the marquee signing that ten Hag needs to make an instant impression on Red Devils supporters who are desperate for success.
The Dutch star is reported to be happy at the Catalonia capital, but Barcelona are keen to offload the player given their dire financial situation. The next few days are reportedly set to be key in the future of the midfielder, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester City said to be alongside United in the race for the player.
Earlier last week, Barca boss Xavi Hernandez revealed that de Jong remains a key part of his plans. But he also conceded that the club might sell the player this summer.
“For me, he is a very important player. He has been a starter almost always, except when he has been rotated. He is a fundamental footballer, but then there is the financial situation of the club. He is a player that I like very much, but we are going to see how the situation is,”
the former Barcelona captain was quoted as saying.
The Dutchman has found the back of the net 13 times in 139 apperances across all competitions over the past three seasons at Barca after his big-money move from Ajax in 2019.
