According to a report in the Spanish outlet AS, Manchester United are closely following Argentine attacking prospect Facundo Farias and have emerged as one of the top European clubs who have joined the pursuit of landing the player. 19-year-old Farias is an attacking midfielder who plays for Colon in Argentina. In 64 appearances for them, Farias has scored 11 goals and has also provided seven assists.
The report has also gone on to claim that United’s interest in the player is currently more advanced than any club in Eng1land. Meanwhile, Italian side AS Roma, managed by former Red Devils coach Jose Mourinho, are also keen on the player.
They have also suggested that Paris Saint-Germain have been informed of the player after a tip-off from Lionel Messi’s father Jorge and has been recommended as a potentially exciting signing.
In his short career so far, the 19-year-old has had to overcome several adversities to make it to the top. AS Argentina reported that he lost his mother to cancer when he was barely 10 years old. Farias also lost his father during the pandemic a couple of years ago.
Despite these difficulties, Farias has never lost sight of his goal of playing football at the highest level. Only last week, he scored his first goal in the Copa Libertadores which is South America’s equivalent of the Champions League. He found the back of the net from an impressive volley to give his side the lead in a 2-1 win over Paraguayan side Club Cerro Porteno.
Farias can take up several roles in the frontline. He has featured as a number 10, a central striker as well as a left and right winger. AS Argentina reported that Farias, ‘participates a lot in the game with the ball sewn to his foot and is an artist.’
While United don’t exactly have a habit of making signings from South America, with the club passing on the attempts of Julian Alvarez recently, incumbent manager Erik ten Hag might shuffle things around. His move to sign Antony from Sao Paulo in 2018 was one of his most successful deals in charge of Ajax.
United last bought Facundo Pellistri from Uruguayan side Penarol in 2020. This was the first deal from the continent since buying Guillermo Varela from the same club in 2013.
