Daniel Sams pulled off a remarkable victory for Mumbai Indians on May 6 versus Gujarat Titans Speaking on Cricbuzz, former India and Delhi Capitals cricketer Virender Sehwag said he was impressed with the execution from the bowler in a pressure situation.
The five-time Indian Premier League, who are reeling at the bottom of the table after losing the first eight matches of the ongoing season, pulled off an unbelievable victory over GT at Brabourne Stadium. Sams was the hero for the side with the ball as he defended nine runs in the last over against an in-form duo of David Miller and Rahul Tewatia.
Sams bowled three dot balls in the over and only conceded three runs. All of his six balls were slower ones, making it hard for batters to time the ball. Miller and Tewatia, who have pulled off crazy run chases in the tournament, were unable to connect the ball here.
“I did not expect them to come back in this fashion. Credit to Sams, all of the balls were slower ones. I cannot understand how Miller failed to connect any one of those. The last two balls did not even touch his bat,”
Sehwag said.
The Australian only bowled slower ones but varied his length quite a bit. Tewatia was run-out on the third ball, while Rashid Khan nearly got caught and bowled on the next. With six required off two and Miller on strike, Sams bowled full and wide line to great effect.
“How many bowlers are there who can defend 9 runs in an over. In this tournament, bowlers have been unable to defend even 22-23 runs. Bumrah and Pollard also executed their slower balls well. Sams never thought of bowling the yorker or the bouncer. I was impressed by Sams today,”
Sehwag added.
The Titans were in total control of the match while chasing 178, with their opening pair of Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha scoring fifties and putting on a 106-run partnership. But Murugan Ashwin sent them back in the same over to get MI back in the game. With this win, they became the only side to successfully defend the target against the table-toppers GT.
