Los Blancos midfielder Luka Modric has reportedly agreed to extend his contract with the club until 2023 and the new deal will also have the option to extend by an additional year. The Croat will end his career at the Santiago Bernabeu where he is likely to be offered a behind-the-scenes role once his playing career is over.
One of the greatest midfielders of his generation, Modric continues to age like fine wine. Despite being 36, he continues to be as phenomenal as ever and is still the heartbeat of the Real Madrid midfield engine. His importance to Los Blancos was evident in the recent dramatic Champions League turnarounds against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
And by the looks of things, the player is all set to end his footballing journley with Real Madrid and has agreed to a new deal. According to AS, Modric has decided to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2023. The deal also has the option of an additional year if the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner continues to perform at a high level.
Having joined the club in 2012 from Tottenham, Modric didn’t exactly have a bright start in Spain. In fact, he was voted the worst signing in La Liga the season he arrived, however, it’s fair to say that he has gone on to make history since then and has hardly had to look back.
His current contract with the club runs out in June, but there’s unanimous agreement between all parties to extend the relationship given how loyal a servant Modric has been to Los Blancos.
If he remains with Real Madrid until 2024, he will be less than three months shy of his 39th birthday, having previously suggested the possibility of playing top-level football until 40 years of age.
It has also been reported that when the Croatian midfield maestro does wish to hang up his boots, Real Madrid will offer him the opportunity to join the club’s sporting structure and work behind the scenes.
Modric has had an illustrious career with Real since arriving in Spain. He has been an essential part of their Champions League successes and is also on course to lift yet another La Liga title this year. Real Madrid are also in the last four of Europe’s premier competition.
