Manchester United sit sixth in the Premier League table and are dangerously close to missing out on European football. Former United midfielder turned pundit Paul Scholes says that the results are expected to take a toll on the team’s spirit.
In the latest chapter to their endless miseries this season, Ralf Rangnick’s men were rocked by a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Nuno Tavares drew first blood within the first five minutes of the game before Bukayo Saka converted his penalty to make it two in favour of the Gunners. Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a goal from close range to reduce the deficit before Granit Xhaka put the game to bed with a 25-yard strike.
As a result, the Red Devils have suffered yet another fatal blow in their hopes of finishing in the top four places. They are currently sixth in the Europa Conference League spots and have 54 points to their name. Arsenal and Tottenham are six and four points ahead, respectively, while having played a game less.
United legend Scholes said that the dressing room at Old Trafford was a complete disaster behind the scenes after having spoken to Jesse Lingard.
“It is an absolute mess. It is a disaster of a dressing room. I had a quick chat with Jesse the other day and I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that the dressing room is just a disaster.”
he revealed while speaking on DAZN.
Meanwhile, Rangnick has rejected the allegation that there’s a fracture in the dressing room. However, he did admit that the players are not particularly close to each other at the moment.
“Obviously after games like today or the games at Liverpool or Everton, there is massive disappointment in the locker room for sure. This is normal. I think the whole group, they get on reasonable with each other. I’m not daring to say they get on well with each other but I don’t see that there is an issue with regard to the atmosphere in the locker room.”
Rangnick also wrote off United’s aspirations for a finish within the Champions League spots and asked the fans to be more realistic.
