Following Manchester United’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, club centre-back Harry Maguire received a serious bomb threat at his home. Police had to be called in and a thorough search with sniffer dogs revealed no suspicious items.
Mohamed Salah scored twice while Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane scored the other two goals as Jurgen Klopp’s ran riot with a 4-0 scoreline at Anfield. Things went from bad to worse for Maguire as in the aftermath of the defeat, he received a serious bomb scare at his home on Thursday.
The England international immediately called the police, who carried out a proper search of his Cheshire mansion, where he lives with his partner Fern Hawkins and their two children. Police sniffer dogs were also used for the hunt of possible explosives, but fortunately, they did not find anything.
Maguire had received the bomb threat via email, with the sender suggesting that explosives would be planted at his home. No suspicious items were found, but it beckons a truly terrible question where the safety of footballers are now under jeopardy.
“In the last 24 hours, Harry has received a serious threat to his family home.
He has reported this to the police who are now looking into the matter. The safety of his family and those around him is obviously Harry’s number one priority.
“He will continue to prepare for this weekend’s fixture as normal and we will not be commenting in any further detail at this time.”
a spokesman for Maguire said,
The Red Devils captain has had a disappointing season and has received plenty of vile criticism from United fans who want him gone. He has been subjected to abuse throughout the season, and many fans have also called for him to be stripped of the United captaincy. Supporters suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo will become the next captain of the team instead.
However, Maguire has defiantly maintained that he will not be forced out of United despite such acts of lunacy. His spokesperson branded the fan who sent the bomb threat a ‘coward’. A source close to the United captain told the Sun that the defender will not be forced out of Manchester United by these kinds of threats.
Although the safety of his and his family continues to be the number one priority, Maguire also maintains the strength of character deal with such situations, the source further added.
Maguire had joined Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 on a six-year deal. His transfer fee of 80 million pounds is still the highest fee paid for a defender in world football. However, several people feel he hasn’t been able to do justice to that price tag and has had lapses in defence quite frequently.
Despite these developments, the club captain is said to be available for the trip to London as United will turn their attention towards Arsenal on Saturday. His manager Ralf Rangnick has sympathised with the situation he has had to deal with and mentioned that he has the support of the entire club.
“He knows everyone is behind him, the club, the players, his teammates. It’s sad enough that crazy things like that happen,”
said the German.
United are in desperate need of three points when they take on Arsenal to have any hope of qualifying for the Champions League next season. The Gunners are arriving into this clash after defeating Chelsea 4-2 mere hours after United’s 4-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool.
